Motel and hotel prices vary tremendously from urban to rural areas and from season to season. B&B rates vary less dramatically, although they're typically higher on weekends and holidays. Also, be prepared to add room tax of about 15% to all rates quoted here. Online discounters such as www.orbitz.com and www.priceline.com can save you quite a bit of money off chain motel and hotel rates, even at the very last minute.
Festivals and conventions can fill accommodations quickly and prices soar, so call ahead to find out what will be going on during your visit. Reservations are always a good idea during Texas' busy periods (most of March for spring break, May through August and the Christmas–New Year's holidays), and they are essential during special events. Better motels and all hotels will take reservations days or months ahead of time. Most chains have toll-free reservations numbers, but it sometimes pays to call the motel or hotel direct to learn of any manager's specials. Be sure to let the hotel know if you plan a late arrival – many motels will give your room away if you haven't arrived or called by 6pm, unless you've guaranteed it on a credit card. Cancellation policies vary, so ask to avoid being charged a penalty fee later.
As a rule of thumb, the price ranges for our accommodations listings are as follows: budget is less than $80 per night, top end is more than $150 per night, and midrange is everything in between.
