Lonely Planet review

Name and association are much of the attraction at Southfork Hotel: though run by the same owners as Southfork Ranch, the hotel is right on a highway, 13km away. Still, it has a kitschy appeal and a useful shuttle.

Looking for a 'Who shot J.R.?' T-shirt? Southfork Hotel has one. This is the sister property to Southfork Ranch, setting for the TV show Dallas. A free shuttle takes you the 15 minutes to the ranch for tours. Reserve ahead to participate in the twice-monthly Saturday night murder mystery dinner at the hotel restaurant where you can sleuth out who's gunning for JR. Rooms at the hotel are as stuck in the '80s as the TV show re-runs (remember burgundy and forest green as a colour scheme?). They are Texas-size, though, and have a lot of stuff: high-speed Internet, coffee-makers, minifridges, irons and boards. Guest wings cluster around greenery-filled courtyards, one of which has a small pool and a hot tub. Historic old Plano, with shops and cafes, is 2km east at 15th St and K Ave (the shuttle runs there and to the DART station, too).
