  1. Clear Lake

The marinas of Clear Lake is 22 miles from downtown, and serves as Houston’s recreational boating port of call. While ‘Clear Lake’ might be an exaggeration, you can’t say it isn’t popular. The lake doesn’t look very clear, but it’s home to one of the largest concentrations of recreational boats in the US.

  2. Kemah Boardwalk

East on Galveston Bay, the Kemah Boardwalk is a cartoonish carnival of commercialism to some, a family paradise to others. Whatever your take, the boardwalk’s attractively garish, there’s plenty to do in the waterfront entertainment complex (especially for kiddies) and it’s right smack on the water. When you see the Ferris wheel, the neon and the sunburns, you know you’ve arrived.

  3. Six Flags Fiesta Texas

You don't have to be a kid to enjoy Fiesta Texas. This popular theme park has plenty of rides that you must be 'this tall' to ride, for grown-ups to lose their lunch over. There are more than 25 kids' rides for the vertically challenged, as well as swimming pools and water rides over in the White Water Bay area (open May to September). The setting – against a limestone quarry that looks similar to the Arizona desert – is dramatic, and there's plenty of music and shows. Parking is $15.
