Bus
Long-distance buses can get you to major points within the region but don’t serve all national parks or important, off-track tourist towns such as Moab. Be aware that bus terminals can be in less safe areas of town.
Air
Phoenix’s Sky Harbor International Airport and Las Vegas’ McCarran International Airport are the region’s busiest airports, followed by the airports serving Salt Lake City, Albuquerque and Tucson. America West, Southwest and Delta are the region’s main carriers.
Car & motorcycle
Private vehicles are often the only means to reach out-of-the-way towns, trailheads and swimming spots.
Driving distances:
Flagstaff–Monument Valley: 170 miles
Las Vegas–Grand Canyon (South Rim): 280 miles
Las Vegas–Zion National Park: 150 miles
Phoenix–Santa Fe: 525 miles
Salt Lake City–Arches National Park: 240 miles
Train
Amtrak’s train service is much more limited than the bus system, although it does link many major Southwestern towns and offers bus connections to other towns (including Santa Fe and Phoenix). The California Zephyr traverses Utah and Nevada; the Southwest Chief stops in Arizona and New Mexico; and the Sunset Limited cuts through southern Arizona and New Mexico.
