Spanning 1,800 square miles (4,662 sq km), the field overlaps with Coconino and Kaibab national forests. Snap memorable photos of the Painted Desert, located in the northern half of Petrified Forest National Park. The desert’s name comes from the varied pigmentation of the rocks, ranging in color from red to lavender to gray.Visit the Trading Post founded in 1911 by the Navajo Nation of Cameron. Built to tame the mighty waters of the Colorado River, the dam created the nearby Lake Powell. Here, receive a safety briefing for your 4.5-hour raft cruise down placid waters. During your easygoing rafting journey covering 15 miles (24 km), admire the beauty of Glen Canyon. Stop halfway for a picnic lunch (sandwich, snacks and fruit) on a riverside beach. Afterward, you have the option of enjoying a swimming break or taking a laid-back hike up a cliff to see ancient petroglyphs carved by the Anasazi, who had made these cliffs their homes.Finish your rafting trip at Lees Ferry, the start of the Grand Canyon and a former ferry crossing and military outpost located in the Glen Canyon Recreation Area.
