Lonely Planet review

University of New Mexico is an adobe wonderland with 13 museums and galleries and lots of public art, a performing arts center and the Tamarind Institute, which single-handedly saved the art of lithography from extinction in the 1960s and '70s. The University Art Museum displays the largest fine-art collection in the state.

There also plenty of restaurants, cafes and delis in this area to refuel in between venues. Maxwell Museum of Anthropology has a permanent 'People of the Southwest' exhibit tracing human history in the region through pottery. A fabricated dig, complete with tools, demonstrates the painstaking side of archaeology. Just south of the campus is the Spanish History Museum, whose artefacts demonstrate the influence of Spanish settlers on New Mexico.
