Lonely Planet review

Its name as seductive as it is intimidating, Death Valley is a crazy-quilted geological playground. Boasting the lowest elevation in the United States, boulders that appear to race across the sun-baked desert floor, mosaic canyons, rolling sand dunes, extinct volcanic craters and palm-shaded oases, the actual valley measures about 100 miles north to south and averages 10 miles wide. Death Valley National Park covers a much larger area –more than 5000 sq miles – encompassing several other valleys and mountain ranges to the north.
