Music sights in USA

  1. Floyd’s Record Shop

A good way to round out your musical tour of the Cajun Prairie is to stop by Floyd’s Record Shop in Ville Platte, 14 miles northeast of Mamou. In 1957 Floyd Solieau left his DJ job to start both the record shop and Flat Tire Music. Through the years, under various label names, Floyd has waxed records for dozens of French-language Cajun and swamp pop legends. The shop, still in the family, is a cultural icon and an excellent resource for all things Cajun – CDs, instruments, books and souvenirs.

  2. Savoy Music Center

Can’t get enough music? The best time to visit Eunice, 20 miles west of Opelousas, is on a Saturday. At 9am Savoy Music Center, accordion factory and shop, hosts a Cajun-music jam session. Musician Marc Savoy and his guitarist wife, Ann, often join in. Look for the huge Savoy Music Company sign west of the Cajun Campground, 3 miles east of town.
