Shopping shopping in USA

  1. A

    Magnificent Mile

The city likes to claim that the Magnificent Mile, or ‘Mag Mile’ as it’s widely known, is one of the top five shopping streets in the world. It’s a bit of a boast, because most of the retailers here are just high-end department stores and national chains that are available throughout the country. Granted, the Mag Mile versions are more slicked up than usual, and their vacuum-packed proximity on Michigan Ave between the Chicago River and Oak St is handy. Probably what’s most magnificent is the millions of dollars they ring up annually. The road does go all out in December with a festive spread of tree lights and holiday adornments.

    Riviera Village

Shoppers unite! Shake off the chains that bind you along the charming sidewalks of Riviera Village, where 150 boutiques, specialty stores, restaurants and salons fill six bustling blocks, with nary a Gap nor B Dalton’s in sight. From the beachy stylings of Lisa Z (1901 S Catalina Ave) to the Tommy Bahama flair of Threads (1907 S Catalina Ave) to the precious PJs of Little Moon (1813 S Catalina Ave) you’ll find something you want to bring home.

  3. Mach’s General Store

Heading north along VT 30 from Dorset, you’ll pass through the blink-and-you’ll-miss-it village of Pawlet. Stop at the fine old-fashioned Mach’s General Store, which generates its electricity from an adjacent stream passing through a gorge. You can see all this from inside the store, thanks to a glass counter.
