Cyber-Dogs
One of those all-things-to-some-people places, Cyber-Dogs is an all-veggie hot-dog stand, espresso bar, internet café (internet free for first 20 minutes, then $6 per hour) and youngster hangout/pick-up joint. Its advertising campaign is based on miniature hand-scribbled-and-stapled chapbooks with cute indie-rock-style cartoons. But the best thing about the place is trying out the weird, insanely imaginative non-meat ‘not-dogs’ with tastes-better-than-it-sounds toppings (eggplant, potatoes, hummus).

Sidecar for Pigs Peace
This one qualifies for the ‘only in Seattle’ tag: an all-vegan deli and store whose profits go entirely to support a nearby sanctuary for pigs rescued from their otherwise grisly fates. Pick up vegan sandwiches, spirulina cookies, organic wine, vegan cupcakes and meat-free pet food, and ask the volunteers who work there about the ‘board of directors.’

Café Flora
A longtime favorite for vegan and vegetarian food, Flora has a gardenlike feel and a creative menu, with dinner treats like seitan spring rolls and breaded coconut tofu dipped in chili sauce, a portobello French dip, caprese pizza and black-bean burgers. Or go for the hoppin’ john fritters or tomato asparagus scrambles at brunch.
