Lonely Planet review

Before it was a hotel, the Arctic Building was known to Seattleites as "the walrus building" for the 27 walrus medallions adorning the exterior. In 2008 the walrus building became the resplendent Arctic Club, a luxury boutique hotel with a rich history.

The Arctic Club started out as a gold rush-era men's club, after which it served for several decades as government offices. After a painstaking renovation (we're told they had to remove lavender-colored paint from the original woodwork) the hotel opened in the summer of 2008 with a decidedly old-fashioned flair. By staying true to the building's history with period furnishings and original architectural details, the hotel creates an ambience straight out of the early part of the last century. Alaskan marble, leaded glass, dark wood panelling and ornamental cornices set the stage. Finishing touches include room numbers set in reproductions of the walrus-head medallions and black-and-white photographs of the original Arctic Club members in the lobby.
