Lonely Planet review for Millennium

If all vegan food could be this satisfying and opulent, there could be cattle roaming the streets of SF and no one would give them a second glance. Seasonal first courses include grilled semolina flatbread topped with caramelized onions, wilted spinach and a flourish of almond romesco, followed by a peppery pastry roulade that opens with a fork’s touch to reveal a creamy center of golden potatoes and smoky achiote (chili) chard, and a saffron-scented rice pudding with mango sorbet. Book ahead for aphrodisiac dinners and vegetarian Thanksgiving.

Gourmet dining ...that just happens to be vegetarian

    adamnsn recommends this,

Even in the free-spirited, socially righteous city of San Francisco, vegetarians can feel like second rate citizens.

Sure, burritos in the Mission*, the world’s best not-dogs**, and the knowledge you are a morally superior being will get you through the day. But what about at night, when you want to glam-up and settle down for a memorable meal - and perhaps even enjoy it with carnivorous friends?

Then Millennium is your place for a vegetarian, gourmet dining experience. A place where you can sit back in style and enjoy the luxury of reading an entire menu (rather than skimming until you find the token risotto).

For value and variety, share a range small plates ($6-11) rather than the comparatively over-priced $24 entrées (or ‘mains’ for anyone outside of US). We were blown away by everything on the menu, with the highlight being the sesame cornmeal crusted oyster mushrooms – which one foodie companion declared “better than any salt and pepper squid I’ve had”. A triumph in his mind.

Their "mostly organic, preferably local" philosophy extends to the long drinks list. And while this will introduce you to some amazing cocktails and new wines, you may find yourself just craving a simple Anchor Steam rather than a wheat and barley free amber ale.

The atmosphere is certainly upscale, however the suits at the bar and those on dates looked no more comfortable than the casually-dressed family in the booth.

Best to book ahead (although you can usually grab a seat at the bar), or even better, sign up for their tweets*** and you’ll be first to hear of regular, limited time specials like “Spanish style burger with beer for $16 – 5:30pm til sold out”
