Pancho Villa
The hero of the downtrodden and burrito-deprived, delivering a worthy condiments bar and tinfoil-wrapped meals the girth of your forearm. The line moves fast going in, and as you leave, the door is held open for you and your newly acquired Pancho’s paunch.

La Taquería
No debatable tofu, saffron rice, spinach tortilla or mango salsa here: just classic tomatillo or mesquite salsa, marinated, grilled meats and flavorful beans inside a flour tortilla - optional housemade spicy pickles and sour cream are highly recommended.

El Tonayense Taco Truck
The best meal on wheels in SF. Burritos and quesadillas are generous to a fault, but the $2 tacos are an easy gourmet meal on the go – especially the al pastor (marinated roast pork) and lengua (beef tongue).

Tropisueño
Last time you enjoyed casual Mexican dining this much, there were probably balmy ocean breezes and hammocks involved. Instead, you’re steps away from SFMOMA, savoring an al pastor (marinated pork) burrito with mesquite salsa and grilled pineapple, and sipping a margarita with a chili-salted rim. The organic rustic decor and the location are upscale, but the prices are about what you’d pay in the Mission, give or take a buck and a BART ride.

Mijita
Owner/chef Traci Des Jardins puts her signature twist on her Mexican grandmother’s standbys, using fresh local produce for tangy-savory jicama and grapefruit salad with pumpkin seeds, and sustainably harvested fish cooked with the minimum of oil in seriously addictive Baja fish tacos. Wash it all down with melon agua frescas (fruit-flavored drinks) bayside, with envious seagulls circling overhead.

El Metate
Smack in the middle of a residential stretch of the Mission is a cheerful yellow nook where you'll find upstanding corn tortillas and venerable carnitas (roast pork that is pulled and fried), though the chicken tacos can get a tad greasy. But the salsa is made in house and the burritos are made with fresh beans, not the stuff that's been sitting out all day at other tacquerías.

Los Socios
Who says you can't get decent Mexican outside the Mission? Here the tacos are Transamerica Pyramids of meat and fresh veggies, and heaps of hot, salty chips and smoky-tangy mesquite salsas are up for grabs on the honor system. Los Socios takes the gray right out of a foggy downtown day with bright flavors, fiesta decor, and Mexican ska on the sound system.

Casa Mexicana
No one remembers the name, but everyone knows the one taqueria that lures Missionites away from their home turf. Load up with carne asada (grilled beef) or al pastor and fresh beans on tortillas made without lard, and choose from six salsas and hot pickles at the condiment bar, and this Casa will become your home away from home-cooking.

Tortas Los Picudos
Mexico City’s signature street food reinvented to satisfy famished Potrero del Sol skateboarders: sandwiches ($6 to $8) stuffed with farm-fresh veggies and healthy poached chicken or tangy marinated pulled pork, with optional pickled jalapeños. Wash it down with a strawberry smoothie or fresh-squeezed OJ, and you can skip dinner.

Little Chihuahua
Who says sustainable, organic food has to be chi-chi and French? Charbroiled tomatillos, sustainable fish, Niman Ranch meats and organic veggies add up to sensational fresh flavor, packed into $4 tacos and $6 burritos.
