Lonely Planet review for La Palma Mexica-Tessen
Follow the hand-slapping sound of tortilla-making in progress to La Palma, and hit the take-out counter for still-hot tortillas, handmade tamales, hunks of carnitas (slow-roasted pulled pork) by the pound, queso fresco (Mexican cheese) and La Palma’s own tangy tomatillo sauce. Now all you need is a small army to finish off that meal you’ve assembled…

Come to La Palma, where it's christmas 365 days a year.
vetiwitch recommends this,
It's lunch time, as I wander down 24th street in the heart of the Mission in San Francisco. There is always a hearty crowd at lunchtimes and on weekends. Its a good sign when the place is packed with Latin American customers. Every single shelf and corner is packed to head height with latin delicacies.
La Palma has the most wonderful hand made Papusa, created on a massive hot plate, which looks a lot like a giant wok. Fat hipped tiny ladies, with a proficiency of slapping the corn into the perfect shape within seconds. I love to stand and watch them cook, chatting wildly over their yummy treats. Some of the papusa's are filled with soft melted cheese and Loroco a tiny vine flower, that adds a remarkable taste to this hot steamy corn meal.
The Chile Relleno Burritos I believe are the best in town, due to the fact the Relleno's are made fresh each day and melt in your mouth. La Palma also make great salsa that you can buy by the pint.
If you want to experience great latin food, this is the place. Its inexpensive, fresh and a welcoming environment. After you choose your food, take a walk to Dolores Park for a picnic and to view the city skyline, from one of the best vantage points in the city.
