Lonely Planet review for Axum Cafe
When you’ve got a hot date with a vegan, the hunger of an athlete, and/or the salary of an activist, Axum’s vegetarian platter for two with spongy injera bread is your saving grace. Dig in with your bare hands, and try not to hog the lip-tingling red lentils and mellow yellow chick peas.

Axum Cafe
vandelayindustries recommends this,
This little place made a trek to the Haight worthwhile. (I was a little disappointed by the area - but that's for another review) My friend and I were absolutely ravenous after a day exploring the Golden Gate Park and dived in here as soon as it opened. As we ate so early in the evening there weren't many others dining so I can't really rate very highly for atmosphere though it may well be buzzing later on. Service was prompt and polite. I absolutely love Ethiopian food and the food here didn't disappoint. We went for the vegetarian platter for two as we are both vegan and it looked like excellent value. The portions are very generous and we could not finish our injera. However, the food could have been spicier; the red lentils (misir) did not have the same kick as the cafe that I go to back in England. Therefore I have only awarded four stars for food. I don't know whether the food has been toned down for the tourist palate or whether it is just a regional difference.
Highly recommended for budget travellers, groups and families. Children will love being able to eat with their hands (the injera serves as plates and cutlery!) and the platters are made for sharing.
