Lonely Planet review
Right off Union Sq, the understated King George maintains its original 1914 charm. Typical of that period, rooms are on the small side, but have up-to-date amenities and a homey warmth. For a downtown hotel, the value-to-price ratio is terrific.
There's nothing slick about the 10-story King George. From the small, slow elevator to the corridor's exposed ceiling pipes, you know this hotel is from another era. Burgundy velveteen curtains and mustard-yellow walls give an inviting look to the rooms, and there are little extras like clock-radios that double as CD players (but don't expect iPod docks). The white-tiled bathrooms have pedestal sinks and smart-looking waffle-weave shower curtains, but fixtures show some wear. The sunniest rooms face south, but overlook a noisy street and have only single-pane-glass windows; the quietest rooms are darker. Executive-level rooms have more space, better furniture and renovated bathrooms. Like most Union Sq hotels, the King George is at the edge of the gritty Tenderloin, but only blocks from high-end boutiques. When in doubt, walk uphill.
Our independent authors have visited King George and selected this as one of our recommended hotels in Downtown & Civic Center.
