    Baker Beach

Down craggy bluffs, past wind-sculpted Monterey pines and cypress trees, beckons a mile-long stretch of sandy beach, with fishing spots galore and full-frontal nudity at the north end (gay men and straight girls). The views of the Golden Gate are spectacular, but huge crowds come weekends. The all-gay local beach is further north, at Marshall’s Beach (aka Marcia’s Beach), immediately before the bridge. Ask around for directions, but never climb the dangerous rugged cliffs north from Baker to reach it. Take pathways, and find the stairs.

    Anchor Brewing Company

Beer-lovers: Anchor Brewing Company offers weekday public tours, but you have to make reservations by phone at least a month in advance (three in summer). It’s worth the wait for the 45-minute tour of Anchor’s historic facilities and shiny-copper brewhouse, the crash course in beer-tasting, and six half-pints of different Anchor brews at the end. For free. ‘Nuf said.

    Bella Pelle Skin Studio

This cheery-bright spa is a chic treat, with lovely details like free mimosas and muffins on Sundays. The down-to-earth staff pampers, whether you’re braving a wax job (they do ’em all here) or lying back for a top-notch facial, the spa’s specialty. They also make their own high-quality scrubs, balms, custom-blended makeup, and even a numbing cream.

  7. F Line Streetcar

All aboard the Pride Express, the most leisurely way to get out and about in SF. Hop the refurbished antique streetcar of your desire: whether you prefer the orange Milan model Castro-bound, a green Bostonian headed straight downtown, or might consider going both ways, this is one city where your preference can always be accommodated.

    Kabuki Springs & Spa

Our favorite urban retreat is a spin on communal, clothing-optional, Japanese baths. Scrub yourself down with salt in the steam room, soak in the hot pool, then the cold plunge, and reheat in the sauna. Rinse and repeat. The look befits the location – slightly dated Japanese modern, with vaulted lacquered-wood ceilings, tile mosaics and low lighting. Men and women alternate days, except on Tuesdays, when bathing suits are required (arrive before 5pm to beat the line). Plan two hours' minimum, plus a 30-to-60-minute wait at peak times (add your name to the waitlist, then go next door to slurp noodles or catch a movie; when you return, breeze right in). Communal bathing…

    City Kayak

You haven't seen San Francisco until you've seen it from the water, and the next best thing to Sir Francis Drake's ship the Golden Hind is a kayak. Newbies can venture calm waters near the Bay Bridge, and experienced paddlers might hit the choppy waters beneath the Golden Gate Bridge or take a moonlight tour with all-inclusive rentals. First-timers can take lessons and head out alone or with an escorted tour; check the website for details.

  10. The Dyke March

Never underestimate the power of the lesbian activist network. The annual Dyke March, a bold, informal, grassroots-feeling equal rights event preceding the Pride Parade, got its start by a single rallying call.

At the 1993 LGBT March, a group called the Lesbian Avengers set forth to Washington, protesting what they saw as the control of Gay Pride by white gay men and corporate sponsors. Armed with one bullhorn and the word-of-mouth telegraph, the Avengers announced the first ever Dyke March and, to their shock, thousands swarmed to the White House. San Francisco's first Dyke March was set up by the same gals the following year. The event now attracts 50,000 lesbian, bi…

    Outdoors Unlimited Kayaking

Athletic pursuits and romance at the same time? Hey, when it's paddling a kayak on a moonlit night across San Francisco Bay, why not? Or you could go in the daytime. You'll need to be in shape for this, though you don't necessarily have to have any kayak experience. You might find yourself paddling across the infamous Raccoon Straits to Angel Island; look up at Alcatraz from its shoreline, see the Golden Gate Bridge and Bay Bridge illuminated by sun or moon. Landing on Angel Island you'll have lunch, and maybe take a hike or just rest your weary arms. Other excursions take you into McCovey Cove, where Giants baseball games can be watched from the water. (At least you'll…

  21. Hash House Harriers

Hash House Harriers is a well-established running club with chapters all over the world. But you shouldn't think of it as an athletic organization. As members of 'the Hash' will say, they are drinkers with a running problem - their goal is to work up a thirst and an appetite every Monday evening.

One member is designated as the Hare, and lays out a paper chase, a route marked with paper or chalk full of devious detours, false leads and dead ends. All the others are the Harriers who try to find their way through bad neighborhoods, muddy fields, rubbish heaps and the odd convent or finishing school. At the end of the run there are wacky ceremonies, plenty of beer and…
