Up in Pacific Beach (or PB) the activity spreads further inland, especially along Garnet Ave, with bars, restaurants and vintage clothing stores. At the ocean end of Garnet Ave, Crystal Pier is worth a gander. Built in the 1920s, it's still home to a cluster of rustic cabins built out over the waves.

We stumbled on Konos Surf Club at 8am in the morning, when we spotted the unique looking Crystal Pier, at Mission Beach, just North of San Diego. As Tourists we decided to stop for a look. But the pier took second place when we walked near Konos. The smell of breakfast aromas in the air made us realise that tourists don't march well on empty tummies. As we neared Konos, we saw the queue extending out the door. We figured somewhere so popular had to have something going for it. So we followed our noses & joined the queue. Whilst in line, we overheard the girls behind us talking about the renown & reputation of Konos. They suggested the Big Breakfast #1 for $5.95 - a toasted muffin, two eggs, bacon, two pancakes, and serving of Konos country fried potatoes. This is the American equivalent of our Hot English Breakfast. My Husband & I ordered our Big Breakfasts, with teenage Son deciding on the Breakfast Burritos. There are a few tables inside the Cafe, but we chose the outdoor tables on the deck adjoining the Crystal Pier. Even though the wind was chilly, this is an amazing Oceanfront dining experience. The hearty, freshly cooked, breakfast and a large cup of steaming coffee really hit the spot. For the price Konos is excellent value for those on a Holiday Budget. By the time we had finished our second coffee, we decided to relinquish our seats to some other hungry diners. The queue now had at least 20 people outside the door. I can't talk about the food at Konos without acquainting you with this unique location on the Southern Californian coastline. From this Aussie's point of view, Crystal Pier is a sight to behold. The pier which extends into the Pacific Ocean is in fact a Hotel. Either side of the pier is lined with about 24 cute timber cottages. For non Hotel guests, the pier gates are unlocked at 9am. It is delightful to wander down past the cottages on the pier, to work off your delicious Konos Big Breakfast.
