Areas of interest to visitors are quite well defined and mostly within easy reach of downtown by foot or by public transportation. San Diego is a fairly safe city, though you should be cautious venturing east of about 6th Ave in downtown, especially after dark. Hostile panhandling is the most common problem. Also steer clear of Balboa Park after dark.
