Lonely Planet review
This cheery, cherry-red building is a standout in a tame residential area. Neatly kept and very well run, it's a hostel that is well worth the extra effort it takes to get to the sights and conveniences, if you're an aficionado of peace and quiet.
In short, this is not where you'll be likely to find a pub-crawling, party-till-you-pass-out scene. It's mellow here. On a typical morning, you might see people reading the paper on a bench out front, or lingering in the small TV lounge, kitchen or the shady courtyard (where there's a BBQ grill, bonfire pit and a place to lock up bikes). Inside, dorm walls are bathed in blues, pinks and yellows. With four to six beds, the rooms are clean; all bathrooms are shared but segregated by gender. In the morning, the do-it-yourself pancake breakfast is made finer with options of chocolate chips and walnuts. If you don't mind not being in the centre of urban action, and will appreciate rather than grumble over the 20-minute walk to Ocean Beach, then this budget place should be your go-to - it is one of the most pleasant hostels around.
