From December to early April only, the Eagle County Airport (970-524-9490), 35 miles west of Vail, has direct jet services to destinations across the country.

Colorado Mountain Express (970-926-9800; www.cmex.com) shuttles to/from Denver International Airport ($62, 2½ hours). Greyhound buses stop at the Vail Transportation Center (970-476-5137; 241 S Frontage Rd) en route to Denver ($23, 2¼ hours) or Grand Junction ($18, 3¼ hours).

Vail’s free buses (970-477-3456; vailgov.com/transit) stop in West Vail, East Vail and Sandstone; most have bike racks.
