Smugglers Brewpub & Grille
Beer-lovers will feel right at home at casual Smugglers, a great place to hang out, sample local brew and eat fried stuff. With at least seven beers on tap, it's a smorgasbord, but go for the chocolatey Two Plank Porter or the Smugglers' Scottish Strong Ale.
The American pub fare (mains $7 to $12) features burgers, fries, salads and sandwiches and snacks. The Smuggler's Nuggets – a mass of fried, sweet dough – will do no wonders for your waistline, but they are a gooey ending.

New Sheridan Bar
Most of this historic bar survived the waning mining fortunes even as the adjoining hotel sold off chandeliers and fine furnishings to pay the heating bills. These days, overdressed visitors chat about upcoming film releases next to the occasional old-timer who hasn't been driven out by escalating property values.
In season, it can get obnoxiously loud and crowded, but locals take over at other times of the year, when it's a cool place to kick off the evening.

The Butcher & The Baker
Two veterans of upscale local catering started this heartbreakingly cute cafe, and no one beats them for breakfast. The to-go sandwiches – a daily rotation that includes turkey and cranberry on crunchy multi-grain bread – are the best bet for a gourmet meal on the trail.
It's the kind of place that represents the new, smart trends in simple, quality food: the ethos here is local, organic and perfect. We're simply head over heels.

Fat Alley
You can pick something off the chalkboard our just take what the other guy has his face in – a cheap and messy delight. Go for the pulled pork sandwich with coleslaw on top. Do it right by siding it with a bowl of crispy sweet-potato fries.
The can beer specials are outrageous.

San Juan Hut System
Experienced cross-country skiers will appreciate the strong series of crude huts along a 206-mile route stretching from Telluride west to Moab, UT. In summer these huts, equipped with bunks and cooking facilities, are popular with mountain bikers. Book well in advance, as huts fill quickly.

Honga's Lotus Petal
Upscale and elegant, Honga's offers a pricey fix for pan-Asian cuisine in a large, two-story dining space. The dishes are elegantly presented – the Korean short ribs just about fall off the bone – and the nightly specials range from Thai to Japanese flavored. We'll forgive the pan flutes.

Excelsior Cafe
One of Telluride's hottest restaurants, Excelsior gets rave reviews for its Euro wine-bar vibe. The menu features a little bit of everything, from Moroccan lamb chops to Montana buffalo short ribs. If you are short on cash, order from the less expensive, but equally tantalizing, bar menu.

Brown Dog Pizza
The pizza? It's thin crust and fair enough, but the crowd makes the place interesting. Ten minutes after you belly up to the bar for a slice and a cheap pint of Pabst, you'll be privy to all the local dirt. It's one of the most affordable meals on the strip.

Between The Covers
This is the town's reliable source for books, with a big selection of local interest, creaking floors and a doting staff. It's a terrific place to browse for paperback vacation reads too, and the coffee counter in back turns out a mean espresso milk shake.

Cosmopolitan
The on-site restaurant at the Hotel Columbia is one of Telluride's most respected for fine modern dining with a twist - can you resist Himalayan yak ribeye or lobster corn dogs? The food is certainly inventive, which makes up for the snooty service.

La Marmotte
Seasonal plates of French cuisine and candlelit warmth make an excellent juxtaposition with the building's former use as a 19th-century ice-house. Start to finish it's a dizzyingly romantic affair.
