Smugglers Brewpub & Grille
Beer-lovers will feel right at home at casual Smugglers, a great place to hang out, sample local brew and eat fried stuff. With at least seven beers on tap, it's a smorgasbord, but go for the chocolatey Two Plank Porter or the Smugglers' Scottish Strong Ale.
The American pub fare (mains $7 to $12) features burgers, fries, salads and sandwiches and snacks. The Smuggler's Nuggets – a mass of fried, sweet dough – will do no wonders for your waistline, but they are a gooey ending.

New Sheridan Bar
Most of this historic bar survived the waning mining fortunes even as the adjoining hotel sold off chandeliers and fine furnishings to pay the heating bills. These days, overdressed visitors chat about upcoming film releases next to the occasional old-timer who hasn't been driven out by escalating property values.
In season, it can get obnoxiously loud and crowded, but locals take over at other times of the year, when it's a cool place to kick off the evening.

Last Dollar Saloon
For a splash of local color, forget about cocktails and grab a cold can of beer at this long-time favorite. With the best selection of imported beers in town, as well as pool tables and darts, it's no wonder this creaky wooden bar is so popular.
