A consignment store with some great bargains. Labels are less than glamorous, but it does have everything from affordable denim to stylish shoes to, gulp, fur. There's a decent assortment of dresses too.

James Perse
There's no denying the beachy grooviness of James Perse, but $85 T-shirts? That's what you get when you combine rootsy, comfy feel-good California clothing and luxury brand aspirations. The focus is men's retail, and its range of mens cargo pants and flannels are very popular around the fireplace. It also stocks sweaters, T-shirts and jackets for women.

Little Bird
This gem of a consignment store has new and vintage luxury designer scarves, dresses, handbags, shoes and more. Gucci, Jimmy Choo, Blahnik – all the handsome boys are here. You can bargain too, and if staff have had the gear for more than 30 days you may strike a deal, but it still won't be cheap. You are in Aspen, after all.

Prana
Monks chant to the patter of beats overhead as shoppers consider organic-dyed yoga outfits. All the clothes are organized by size – a nice touch – and the signs encourage an awareness of 'cosmic order.' Aside from all this new age excitement, Prana is wind-powered and hosts art events.

Starr's Clothing Co
Established in 1914 and still Boulder's leading denim resource. This store is damn near warehouse-sized, with all manner of stressed, smooth and relaxed denim. They also carry the odd top end designer label like Southern California fave Free People.

This boutique has an effortless charm, and stocks accessories, interesting jewelry and dresses that are hip and casually sophisticated. Considering the careful selection and high quality, it's also surprisingly inexpensive.

Kemosabe
The sister to Vail's cowboy apparel depot, it does the same handmade boots and Stetson hats – steam shaped to please. Expect friendly faces, a stuffed buffalo head, gleaming belt buckles and a bluegrass soundtrack.

Back to the Roots
This being an old hippie town, you'll need a one-stop shop for your earthy threads, rain sticks and toe rings. This is it, and it's a life-affirming browse packed with sustainable and free-trade gear.

Kali's Denim
A pricey, groovy and snug boutique that shares space with the store of jeweler Kathryn Penn. It features some young designer labels such as Gypsy 05, BB Dakota, and Young, Fabulous and Broke.

Safron
Cute, cluttered and crammed with both vintage gems and new designer clothes, this is the grooviest, funkiest boutique we visited in southeast Colorado.
