    Outdoors Geek

This mom-and-pop gear outfitter is a lot friendlier to deal with than fighting through the mobs at REI. It works like this: you call and talk to Will, who puts together a package of top gear for hiking and camping and either ships it to you or arranges a time for you to pick it up at his Aurora distribution center.

This personalized service, along with high quality goods, is the reason we love the Outdoors Geek. Also, the website is perfect for novice campers as well, with tips that will help dispel the anxiety of getting out into nature for the first time.

    Stranahans Colorado Whiskey

Only a dozen barrels of whiskey are produced from this family distillery each week...and they’re damn good. Using water from the Rockies, Colorado barley and white oak barrels, it’s a rare taste of quality over quantity. Short tours of their facility are available, though limited space means its best to sign up online.

    Denver Bouldering Club

The instruction for serious climbers is a better at the Colorado Mountain School in Estes Park, but this climbing gym in the heart of the city is a good way to get psyched for a trip into the mountains. It's also huge – with a 1500-sq-ft facility that's open 24 hours a day.

    Denver Skate Park

Possibly the best free skate park in the United States, this large outdoor area has various bowls and surfaces to suit all abilities. It’s best for young skaters early on the weekends. For advice and a snack between shredding, look for Sharon, the ‘skate park mom,’ who keeps a watchful eye on the scene.

  5. Denver Microbrew Tours

This popular tour samples local craft beers from the boutique makers in the Lodo district. It takes a couple of hours in the afternoon on Friday, Saturday or Sunday. The tour kicks off from the Great Divide Brewing Company.

Cook Street School of Fine Cooking

Classes here are sharply focused, taking on ethnic flavors and cooking techniques from a distant region (like North Africa, India or Spain) or an intense look at our favorite foods ('Scotch and Steak' class anyone?). The instructors are well pedigreed and you'll leave stuffed.

    Platte Valley Trolley

Ride the historic Platte Valley Trolley that trundles along its tracks from the REI store south to the downtown Denver area. The sights aren't much – mostly the same stuff you see in a short walk around the area – but the staff of history buffs are enlightening.

  8. Denver Inside & Out

This outfit offers interesting historical walking tours based on the 1922 daylight robbery of the Denver Mint. They're cleverly done, with the some of the robbers coming to life along the way, and mysteries and clues acted out in situ.

    Pura Vida Fitness & Spa

Sleek as the Starship Enterprise, this modern spa is Denver's best. It isn't cheap, but a sure bet for modern workout facilities, yoga classes, group fitness sessions and a chance to sweat alongside Denver's business class.

    Edgeworks

For snowboard rentals and superior service (hand edging and waxing, stone grinding and repair) this is Denver's best shop. The guys are extremely friendly as well, and can point boarders to the best area rides.

The guys behind the counter at this small shop might be the friendliest bike mechanics in the area, and their rental gear is top notch.
