Best US ski slopes
Blog: Lonely Planet blog - 8 February 2010
With the Winter Olympics dominating British Columbia’s best skiing starting this weekend, we thought we’d look just south to the USA’s best ski slopes. (Apologies to the slopes of upstate New York or Vermont out east, but the best US skiing is a truly Western matter.) Jackson Hole, Wyoming Big, fast, deep — Jackson Hole is not [...]

Our neighbor just around the corner, The Original Woody's Wood-Fired Pizza, makes some of the very best pizza in Golden, Colorado. Along with New Belgium Brewery and the Golden Bike Shop, Woody's hosts a community bicycle ride the last Tuesday of each month, from April through October, in which participants of all ages ride through our beautiful downtown and participate in festivities at the restaurant. And one lucky person wins a brand-new cru

The West Was Made for an Airstream
Blog: Trans-Americas Journey - 18 October 2009
We spent the past month or so in Colorado, Utah and Arizona where we were once again afflicted with Airstream Withdrawal. The endlessly picture-perfect landscapes full of BLM and National Forest land positively crawling with perfect (and free) places to park an Airstream made us long for the days when we were lucky enough to have our own borrowed Airstream Safari SE in tow as we reported for the Airstream Adventure blog .

Skiing with Kids in Colorado, Tips from a Local
Blog: Ciao Bambino! - 15 October 2009
When you live outside Colorado, planning a ski trip to go there is intimidating. There are simply too many options. Moreover, deciphering where to go with kids is a challenge. Skiing is so popular with families that every resort ’says’ they have great facilities and programs for kids. I decided to get the real scoop from a local. Kara Williams lives in Carbondale, CO with her husband and kids (7 and 9). She is the co-publisher of The Vacation Gals and is an amazing resource and travel writer.

We’ll Pass (Goodbye Eldora, CO Hello Gunnison)
Blog: Trans-Americas Journey - 8 October 2009
During a week of Rocky Mountain Bliss at our friend Marca’s Valhalla cabin in Eldora, Colorado we enjoyed extreme golf cart off-roading (those things are tougher than they look…), speed hiking through three different seasons in a single afternoon, hot tub soaking, 50 mph wind (okay, we didn’t enjoy that so much) an old musical favorite (Galactic played live at the Fox theater in Boulder where we were charged a TicketBastard style surcharge even though we bought our tickets at the venue’s box office) plus a brand new musical discovery.

Blues & Brews – Telluride, CO (Day 3)
Blog: Trans-Americas Journey - 1 October 2009
Sunday got started off right with a hearty breakfast at the Telluride Elk’s Lodge which has a funky long bar along one wall, a stage in the back (where a singer/songwriter serenaded diners) and enormous stuffed elk heads all over the place. Then it was onward to the final day of this awesome festival. Almost every musician at the festival made it a point to mention that Telluride is, by far, the most beautiful stage setting they’ve ever played at. Many whipped out cameras to capture the scene from the stage for themselves.

Welcome to October, Rocky Mountain Style
Blog: Trans-Americas Journey - 1 October 2009
It may only be the 1st of October but here in Eldora, Colorado–at nearly 9,000 feet directly below the Continental Divide–winter can and will come early. This morning we awoke to fresh snow and howling winds. Believe it or not, this is already the second snow of the season for Eldorans. However, yesterday was quite the opposite. Most of the day was warm and sunny.

Blues & Brews – Telluride, CO (Day 2)
Blog: Trans-Americas Journey - 30 September 2009
Did we mention the rain? It never down-poured and the glorious Colorado sunshine always returned but we did get enough of the wet stuff to make some quality mud pits to dance barefoot in. What do you expect during a September festival in the mountains! Day 2 was extra wet for another reason besides the rain–it was the day the festival held the Grand Tasting. Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. (from Chico, CA where Karen grew up) was the festival’s anchor brewery but on Day 2 more than 50 microbrews tented up and poured their stuff for a very eager crowd.

Love at First Sight in Boulder
Blog: Away Together - 14 September 2009
I have been in Boulder, Colorado, less than 24 hours and already feel as though I found a home away from home, or perhaps a home to move to in the future. Or maybe I lived here in a past life, about 140 years ago, when the home we’re renting was built — who knows?

Magic at Mesa Verde and Along the San Juan Skyway
Blog: Away Together - 12 September 2009
Inside a cave perched high on a cliff face in Mesa Verde National Park, where remnants of rooms built from stone have stood for more than 800 years, I got down on my hands and knees to crawl through a dark tunnel only a few feet high and barely wide enough for my shoulders.

One of the ways we’ve discovered to arrive to a city feeling more in tune with it, is to listen to podcasts from local community radio. It’s a great way to get a feel for a city, know some of the current issues and even get hints on local places to eat and shop. One podcast [...]
