Great Sand Dunes National Park
For all of Colorado’s striking natural sights, this sea of sand – the country’s youngest, quietest and most diverse national park – is a place where nature’s magic is on full display. At the center of the park is a 55-sq-mile dunefield, surrounded by steep mountain peaks on one side and glassy wetlands on the other.
Timpas & the Comanche National Grassland
Heading west from La Junta along Hwy 350 toward Trinidad, you’ll pass another of the Santa Fe Trail’s signature sites in Timpas: the gateway to the Comanche National Grassland, an unforgiving wilderness of hip-high grasses and wild grains, rising into small hills and diving into shallow canyons.
