Old Town Guesthouse

A cute historic bed and breakfast. The original building was once the jail, city hall and fire department headquarters; unfortunately it burned down in 1990. This new structure was rebuilt to look historic.

This is a good inexpensive choice. Recently remodeled, the Alpine Inn has a range of room types – including family rooms – all with cable TV and wireless internet, and free continental breakfast. There's an indoor pool and pets are welcome.

You can get grub and catch some shut-eye at at this old lodge, which offers comfortable rooms in a refurbished miners' boarding house. The on-site Argentine Grille serves delicious beef tenderloin tacos with mango, chile and cilantro.

Refurbished in 2009, 'The Vic' has a terrific setting next to Box Canyon Park on the Uncompahgre riverfront near the Ouray Ice Park. Rooms have cable TV, fridges and coffeemakers, some with balconies and splendid views.

Owned by a former Olympian, this aging midranger set in northeast Boulder is both far from fancy and from the center of town. Still, rooms are large and they accept pets and have laundry facilities.

Aspenalt Lodge

A roadside 1980s motel with saggy beds in superclean, spacious rooms with wi-fi. It's set in a sweet location right on the Frying Pan River, but the rooms don't exactly do the lovely setting justice.

Black Canyon Motel

Main St East heading into Montrose is lined with chain motels. The Black Canyon is one of the few independents, offering good lodgings at a reasonable price. There are family rooms and has a complimentary breakfast.
