  6. San Juan Hut Systems

Experienced cross-country skiers will appreciate the strong series of crude huts along a 206-mile route stretching from Telluride west to Moab, UT. In summer these huts, equipped with bunks and cooking facilities, are popular with mountain bikers. Book well in advance, as huts fill quickly.

  7. Wilderness Aware Rafting

For rafting, stop by Wilderness Aware Rafting. You'll want to run Brown's Canyon (Class III to IV), the Narrows (III to IV) or the Numbers (IV to V), and the earlier in the season the better (try for late April or early May, when the river is bloated with snow runoff and the rapids are much more intense). The company is located at the junction of Hwys 285 and 24 at Johnson Village, 2 miles south of Buena Vista.

  8. Cottonwood Hot Springs Inn & Spa

After a day on the river, forget the soreness with a soak at Cottonwood Hot Springs Inn & Spa. The five pools are rustic with fantastic views (the stars can be amazing). The hot springs are about 6 miles south of Buena Vista. You can spend the night in one of the simple dorms ($35), rooms (from $97) or cabins (from $165) - the latter come with a private soaking pool. Even campsite rates ($35) include use of the public pools. The cabins are pet-friendly for an extra $10 to $15 per night, depending on dog size.
