Tapas restaurants in USA

  1. A

    Firefly

Firefly is always packed with a fashionable local crowd, not just for the singles’ scene on the late-night patio, but also for the food. Tapas-style dishes are often fusion-spiced, but still shake hands with Spanish tradition, from patatas bravas to chorizo clams and vegetarian delights. A backlit bar dispenses the house specialty sangria and infused mojitos. On some nights, hot Latin turntablists spin. Reservations strongly recommended.

  2. B

    Cafe Tu Tu Tango

An explosion of color and artwork cram the adobe walls of this fun Spanish eatery. Food is served 'tapas-style' (small portions), and dining is often interrupted by spontaneous performances of salsa dancing or magic shows. Chicken Cajun eggrolls and oriental steak skewers are the favorites - and don't forget a huge pitcher of luscious sangria.

  3. C

    Flat Iron

If you want to stop for dinner or a drink before or after an event at the Garden, you can’t do better than this trendy lounge inside the Bulfinch Hotel, which claims to offer ‘a modern American interpretation of Spanish tapas.’ The description is apropos if ‘modern American’ means ‘international, ’ as the menu features wide-ranging items such as tuna tartare, sea bass ceviche, seaweed salad, duck confit, Kobe beef sliders and homemade french fries. The small plates are uniformly delicious and there is an impressive collection of cocktails to match.

    El Quinto Pino

Trolling for tapas is easy enough in small-plate-crazy New York, but true aficionados of the Spanish treats are often disappointed. Not anymore. Now there's El Quinto Pino, a long narrow room ringed with 16 bar stools and no place else to sit; you'll have to lean on the bar like you're in Madrid and snack away on olives, anchovies, sautéed and garlicky shrimp, mini panini, cod sticks, calamari and more. If you must sit down, the owners also run Tia Pol around the corner; same great food, but with a wee bit more space.

    Casa Mono

Another winner from Mario Batali and Chef Andy Nusser, Casa Mono has a great, long bar where you can sit and watch your pez espada a la plancha and gambas al ajillo take a grilling. Or grab one of the wooded tables and nosh on tapas with jerez (sherry) from the bottles lining the walls. For a cheese dessert, hop next door to Bar Jamon, also owned by Batali; you may have to squeeze in - the place is communal and fun.

    Boqueria Flatiron

This expansive, welcoming tapas joint features classics as well as new twists on the expected, and you can watch them being assembled as you sip your unique beer-and-pear sangria and peer into the open kitchen here. Standouts include the pan-roasted brussels sprouts with chorizo, mushroom-chicken croquettes and salt-cod fritters, as well as the selection of hard and soft cheeses. This is a smaller (more crowded) branch of the SoHo original.

    Raku

We love the chicken curry udon noodles here. Our obsession with Raku's noodles may be unique, but everyone else seems to be obsessed with the restaurant itself these days. Where else can you get such a delicious assortment of fresh Asian fusion dishes at reasonable prices? Other menu musts include 'Pan-Asian tapas' and a selection of sushi, salads, fish and meat. How about a green tea martini? There's a second branch in Bethesda.

    Bazaar

Bazaar In the SLS Hotel dazzles with over-the-top design by Philippe Starck and futuristic tapas by José Andrés. Caprese salad pairs cherry tomatoes with mozzarella balls that explode in your mouth, or try cotton-candy foie gras or a Philly cheesesteak on 'air bread.' Cocktails and patisserie are similarly outré. Caution: those small plates add up.

    kittichai

Celebrated for its striking decor - bright red silk curtains against dark, carved walls - and creative menu, Kittichai does tapas (limestone tartlet with minced chicken, marinated monkfish in pandan leaves, and more) and mains (roasted red curry with vegetables, braised short ribs in green curry or a rich seared aged sirloin with fermented black bean and whiskey sauce).

    Regional

Cuisine from 20 Italian regions can be sampled in a series of small plates, or you can hone in on a particular favorite - pizza from Naples, for example - and get your starters, wine and dessert from that region. The name gives the gimmick away, but Regional is on to a good thing. The pastas - filled with cheese and veggies and/or spicy meats - steal the show.

    Kona Brewing Company

This hip eatery is known first for its microbrews, like Longboard Lager and Castaway IPA, and then for its local-style pupu (small plates), such as 'ahi appetizers and wood-fired pizzas. Hawai'i Kai is an eastern suburb of Waikiki.

Curving booths, art deco furnishings and mosaics fill out Solera's three floors, where tapas and sangria (especially when served on the rooftop patio) keep the hipsters flocking in.
