Café Asean
A tiny spot on a short stretch of street, this eclectic and homey crevice is easy to miss. But wouldn’t that be a shame? It serves up refreshing takes on Malaysian, Thai and Vietnamese concoctions to a low-key, cool-cat crowd who know you don’t need to plunk down wads of cash for authentic flavor. Try the spice-crusted scallops in coconut sauce, rice noodles with shrimp, grilled hangar steak with lemongrass or egg noodles and tofu in peanut sauce (among several meatless options).

Sip a vodka-and-champagne-based Red Pearl while casually scanning the happy crowd and anticipating platters of such flavor bombs as wok-tossed Kobe beef and perky Thai green curry.

Japonais
This sushi and sake bar is designed for socializing. While panko-crusted crab cakes and grilled Kobe beef may not always hit the right notes, a theatrical lipstick-red dining room with a sculpted wood ceiling and a casino-view lounge with gossamer drapes do.
