Blue Hill Tavern
The dining room has blue shimmery fabrics and dark wood furnishings, a subtle backdrop to the bold and flavorful dishes at this award-winning spot. Recent hits include grilled octopus on endive with cloves, and tender slow-cooked lamb loin. Good service (and wine recommendations) and an outdoor rooftop bar in summer.

BB's Kitchen
A local darling and winner of the 2011 Diners' Choice award, this 2nd-floor patio is the best spot for a casual lunch or a leisurely gourmet breakfast (think lobster Benedict or wild morel omelet). This isn't show food – the chef-owners are committed to quality, down to curing their own meats. For dinner, slip into a red booth for delicious house sausage pizza or poached halibut served over a gorgeous mint pea puree.

Admiral
Walking by, you might guess this little concrete bunker was a dive bar. That's what they want you to think. This purposefully inconspicuous West Asheville spot is one of the state's – perhaps the country's – finest New American restaurants, serving wildly creative and irreverent dishes like duck breast with pimento cheese, steak tartare with Sriracha (hot chili sauce) aioli, and banana-Nutella-marshmallow cake with tempura apples. Phone a week ahead for reservations and maybe you'll get lucky and score a table.

80 Thoreau
Understated and elegant, this modern restaurant is an anomaly in historic Concord – but that's a good thing. The menu – short but sweet – features deliciously unexpected combinations of flavors, mostly using seasonal, local ingredients. There's also a busy bar area, which offers a short selection of classic cocktails and long list of wines by the glass.

Vert
The exquisite, almost too-pretty-to-eat salads are the must-try dishes at Wolfgang Puck's stylish new addition to the Hollywood & Highland complex. While you wait for your leafy lunch, sip on a signature Bellini (prosecco and green apple juice) and watch the continuous parade of passersby - the adjoining exterior walkway provides an awesome view of the Hollywood sign.

55 Degrees
In a former silversmith’s shop, this elegant newcomer serves delectable cuisine amid exposed-brick walls trimmed with artwork and old-world touches. The menu features excellent cheeses, quinoa and roasted-walnut salad, seared sea-scallops, roasted duck and other tempting choices. It’s matched by a decent wine list.
