    Roy's Kahana Bar & Grill

A branch of Roy Yamaguchi's renowned empire, the restaurant centers around an exhibition kitchen and rakes in a crowd with its outstanding Hawaii Regional Cuisine. 3. C

    Sawtelle Kitchen

This contempo dining room gives standard Western dishes an eccentric Japanese twist, mostly with success. Pasta is paired with Pollock caviar and daikon sprouts, the pork chops are drizzled with olive-ginger sauce and the yams deep-fried and served with plum-mayo. They don't have a liquor license but you're free to BYOB.

    Mako

Champion chef Makoto Tanaka trained with Wolfgang Puck and now supplies the faithful at his own minimalist-chic restaurant. The small-plate menu is ideal for sampling flavors and textures, from snow-crab tempura to wok-sautéed baby halibut or the excellent yuzu meringue tart. At lunch most people order the 'Bento Box' filled with whatever treats inspire Makoto that day.

  5. E

    En Japanese Brasserie

This high-ceilinged space is anchored by a wide sushi bar, and you’ll know you’ve entered some place special by the amazing earthy yet modern decor – not to mention the exuberant welcome call you’ll get from the chefs in the open kitchen. Menu options are sublime and range from snow crab tempura with avocado to black cod in miso. Perhaps the biggest excitement, though, is the range of freshly made tofus, served in warm scoops on an hourly basis. A front bar provides a moody place to sip a cocktail while gazing out over Hudson St.
