Join the shaggy rockers reading graphic novels and eating globe-spanning dishes like the veggie burrito with tofu, falafel plate and Thai green curry. The small room is industrial chic, with gray booths and funky artwork peppering exposed brick walls. Up until 8:30pm, you can bring booze over from the Empty Bottle bar–music venue next door to accompany meals.

One of the most stylish places in the U District, Flowers has a vegetarian buffet served until 5pm, and dinners include meat choices. The lunch menu includes 20 sandwiches, each around $5. After hours, it becomes an inviting place to sip a cocktail, munch on an appetizer and ‘do homework’ with a promising study partner.

This attractive space next to Flowers had just been remodeled when we visited, but it still has a Casablanca feel, and the core of the menu is built around fragrant jasmine rice bowls ($8 to $12) in just about any combination you can imagine. The bar is hopping at night, and drinks are large and well crafted.

The cult of the bike messenger runs strong in Chicago, and this restaurant-bar is a way station for tattooed couriers and locals who come for the strong, microbrew-centric beer list, vegetarian-friendly food (including West African groundnut stew and tofu fajitas) and festive back beer garden.
