    Hot Cookie

If this place seems familiar, that says something about your taste in cookies and entertainment. After a couple of adult film scenes were shot here, Hot Cookie became the place to be seen and photographed for porn stars – hence the wall of signed Hot Cookie underwear, and customers eating chocolate chip cookies with a certain gusto.

    Devil's Food

They do supper and sandwiches, but the decedent pastries are reason enough to visit this lovely Washington Park cafe. The hardest to resist is the red velvet hedgehog – a moist red cake covered in cream cheese icing and shaped like a little monster. The brunch menu, crowned by an excellent salmon Benedict, is a neighborhood favorite.

    Liguria Bakery

Bleary-eyed art students and Italian grandmothers are in line by 8am for the cinnamon-raisin focaccia hot out of the 100-year-old oven, leaving 9am dawdlers a choice of tomato or classic rosemary and 11am stragglers out of luck. Take what you can get, and don't kid yourself that you're going to save it for lunch.

    Moana Bakery & Café

Since Moana's French pastry master left to start his own restaurant, the pastries here have lost their edge, but everything else remains right on at this hip restaurant. The blackened 'ahi wrap sandwich served with mango-pineapple salsa and Moloka'i sweet potatoes is a sure winner.
