Lonely Planet review for Horizons
One of the few restaurants in Philly to satisfy the vegan gourmand, Horizons serves healthy, guilt-free dishes made of soy and veggies.

If I could marry a plate of food, I would have.

As tempting as everything is at Horizons, Philly's renowned vegan upscale eatery, the 5-course tasting menu (available Mon. – Thurs. only) steals the show. Monetarily speaking, it is a bargain ($45 for 5 courses) but gastronomically speaking, it is pure gluttony!
The first two courses are appetizing and understated: first a salad of beets, tomatoes, cucumbers and vinaigrette topped with a mound of fresh frisée. After that, a trio of potato samplings – crispy purple fingerlings with fresh corn, a Yukon gold and pea fritter in saffron sauce and a chic take on an American potato salad. In between courses long thin strips of herb-flecked focaccia, baked to perfection with a cornmeal-like crunch are there for the nibbling along with garlic and herb infused olive oil for dipping.
The next course is a magnificently choreographed dance of flavors and textures for the tongue: a luscious mixture of hearts of palm, lightly battered and fried to a golden crisp. The greaseless, tender cake sits atop a mash of avocado, encircled by a savory horseradish cream, superbly balanced to allow it to be noticed without dominating the dish. Atop the cake lies a roasted red pepper coulis, a combination of sweetness and tang.
The meal winds down a bit with a course of exotic mushrooms, varieties too many to count. A mound of cooked spinach sits in a bit of mushroom broth almost entirely hidden by a single, round parsnip-filled ravioli.
All good things must come to an end, but this unforgettable culinary act goes out on a high note with a trio of dessert samples: a miniature ramekin of crème brulée, coconut cake layered with strawberries, whipped cream and topped with a sprig of mint, and a chocolate filled demi-tasse complete with a pistachio biscotti for dipping. By this point I wished I had worn stretchy pants.
With its attentive service, softly lit Caribbean-themed walls, and smooth world music through its speakers, Horizons is well-worth a stop, vegan or not.
