Lonely Planet review
This 1926 'English Renaissance' hotel has attracted many celebrities. Sly Stallone lived here for two years. OJ Simpson did some time as well, as did President Clinton. Some rooms are well sized with views towards Rittenhouse; others are small and drab.
The principal reason to stay at this hotel is to enjoy its excellent real estate near Rittenhouse Square. While it's pleasing to think that the old place retains the auras of the many celebrities who've slept here over the years, the hotel possesses multiple lacklustre qualities. Some rooms are poorly lit and have uninspired views into a dim light well. While mattresses are reasonably comfortable, they can be covered with ill-advised yellow-and-green bedspreads. Bathrooms are clean, but some are in need of renovation (which is fortunately slated to begin soon). Other rooms are larger and in better shape. Things improve in the lobby, which is grand, even if a bit tacky. Decoration consists of faux-heraldic shields over big fireplaces and landscape paintings featuring foxhunts and gothic cathedrals in distant misty glades.
