Lonely Planet review
Philly's smallest hotel has a European atmosphere and friendly staff, and is right near Independence Park. Its very-small-but-quaint-rooms feature brass beds and private baths, and the first floor of the place is a congenial bar and restaurant.
Sandwiched between National Independence Historical Park and the lively nightlife of Old City, this four-storey walkup has been letting its 12 rooms since 1832, when it provided temporary housing for longshoremen back when the waterfront bustled with masted ships. Basic rooms come with just enough space to navigate around queen-size beds, minimally decorated walls painted light blue, and microscopic private baths. Breakfast is included. Pets are allowed, and there is no elevator. For many, the small hotel's finest attribute is its popular first-floor pub, which attracts a nice blend of tourists and locals. Unlike most US hotel bars, this cosy place evokes the culture of the city instead of the usual corporate placelessness found elsewhere. It also serves excellent fries!
