Lonely Planet review

Channel your inner aristocrat for a night at The Benson, likely Portland's most elegant hotel. Built in 1912, it's Old World lobby is a walnut-paneled time machine, complete with Austrian crystal chandeliers, Italian marble floors and Axminster carpets.

One wall of the lobby is adorned with a massive mirror, supposedly from the Hawaiian Royal Palace. Another wall sports an honest-to-goodness Black Forest cuckoo clock. The restaurant boasts a wine collection of more than 6000 bottles and has received the Wine Spectator's Award of Excellence. Nightly wine tastings are conducted for hotel guests from behind a hidden door, and jazz musicians liven up the lobby each night at eight. Most importantly, the mattresses are Tempur-Pedic. Is it worth the money? For the architects among you, we'd have to give it a thumbs up. After all, it was designed by famed Pacific Northwest architect AE Doyle.
