Shelter Island information
A quick ferry ride on the South Ferry from the edge of North Haven, which borders Sag Harbor, will take you to sleepy Shelter Island, nearly a third of which is dedicated to the Mashomack Nature Preserve, dotted with hiking trails. Take precautions while hiking – ticks are an ever-present problem. Outside the Mashomack Preserve, Shelter Island abounds in historic B&Bs and romantic restaurants, making it easy to spend a few days here soaking up the nature and history. Check out www.shelter-island.org, a listings website run by the non-profit Shelter Island Club, for the latest information on what’s available.
