Having a car is near essential in these parts. Adirondack Trailways (800-776-7548; www.trailwaysny.com) operates daily buses from NYC to Kingston, the Catskills’ gateway town, as well as to Saugerties, Catskills, Hunter and Woodstock. Buses leave from NYC’s Port Authority. The commuter rail line Metro-North (800-638-7646; www.mta.info/mnr) makes stops through the Lower and Middle Hudson Valley.
