I'm planning to leave Chicago Sep 30, arriving in Charleston Oct 8. I want to stop in Asheville, NC, and spend 3 or 4 days in Savannah. I'm looking for suggestions on a route, things to see along the way, reasonable places to stay in Asheville and Savannah.

We (2 adults + 10yr child) are planning 3 week car trip across Colorado, Arizona (Grand Canyon)and California in the end of June, starting in Denver (Boulder/Estes Park area) and finishing in South Oregon, where we'll meet our friends.
