The Cemetery on the Old Farm…in Queens?
Blog: Scouting NY - 11 November 2009
Staring down 54th Street from 31st Ave in Woodside, Queens, a street lined with boxy brick apartments and a scant bit of foliage, one would not expect to find one of the oldest cemeteries in New York nestled in amongst the buildings… But there it is, halfway down the block: the Moore-Jackson Cemetery, founded in 1733 [...]

Blog: everthenomad - 10 November 2009
Yesterday was a sunny Sunday so my man and I decided to walk across the Brooklyn Bridge. This iconic stroll is among my favorite New York City activities.

The Cemetery Down The Alley
Blog: Scouting NY - 9 November 2009
I must have walked past the entrance to Marble Cemetery on Second Ave (btw. 2nd & 3rd Sts.) countless times before I first noticed its existence (and I’m guessing I’m not the only one). Sandwiched between two buildings is this iron gate (technically 41 1/2 Second Ave), which is locked 99% of the year. Even if [...]

A Closer Look at the PS 110 Owls
Blog: Scouting NY - 4 November 2009
A few weeks ago, I wrote about PS 110, an elementary school located just south of the Williamsburg Bridge… …whose roof is lined with a number of really great stone owls (a parliament of owls, to use the correct phrasing!). I notice the owls every time I cross the Williamsburg Bridge, and I mentioned in the post [...]

Halloween in NY: Bleecker Street
Blog: Scouting NY - 28 October 2009
Halloween is the only time of the year that I actually pay attention to store window displays, and I’m always impressed by the offerings on Bleecker Street in the West Village. I took a bike ride down Bleecker today to take some pictures (I’m convinced there’s some sort of secret neighborhood association that spreads extra [...]

Love handles, Actually
Blog: Big City Blog - 21 October 2009
Today marks the one-month anniversary of my departure from Calgary, in search of a new adventure, a new beginning, and ultimately a new home. I am also in search of a new gym.A month of living (quite happily, I hasten to add) on restaurant food and occasional home-cooking with various relatives, interspersed with about 4 half-baked workouts and approximately 3 vegetables, has taken its toll. As I type the big words, I can feel the love handles moving ever so slightly.

A Visit to Castle Rock
Blog: Scouting NY - 20 October 2009
Nothing beats asking what you’re supposed to be scouting for, and being told: “Castles.” If you’ve ever driven along Route 9D in Garrison, New York, you may have seen it from the road: a fairy tale-like castle poking out from the trees at the top of a mountain: Built in 1881, Castle Rock was the estate of [...]

Travel Video – New York City Portrait (HD Time Lapse)
Blog: GoBackpacking - 17 October 2009
_ I was still in a New York state of mind when I picked out this week’s travel video. I love being able to see a place through a new perspective, and this time lapse of the city did just that for me. Amazingly, Max Moos shot all the footage during a 3-week stay in April 2006. If [...]Buy travel insurance from Worldnomads.com (Lonely Planet's preferred carrier)

“Three Days in the Big Apple” is the latest episode of One Pint at a Time. This was our first trip to New York City. We always try to maximize the experiences in our beer travels but, even for us, the list for this trip was ambitious. We had 32 beer places to visit and only [...]

76-Second Travel Show: "Solving the Manhattan Bridge Problem"
Blog: REID ON TRAVEL - 12 October 2009
Show #002The "76-Second Travel Show" team has always been a proponent of secondary infrastructural sites, like the Manhattan Bridge -- beautiful and noisy, the MB of Brooklyn's hip "DUMBO", yet completely overshadowed by the smaller Brooklyn Bridge nearby. That's why we were jazzed the city was putting money into panel discussions to celebrate its 100th anniversary this year.Only, there's a problem. And the SSTS ("76-Second Travel Show") has an answer (and 40 bonus seconds).

everyone has to come close to the garment district, at least if you ever have to use the ugliest train station ever — penn station. it still is hard to believe that the city allowed the old amazingly beautiful one designed by mckim, mead and white to be destroyed. oh right, i forgot, madison square garden was [...]

Got the runs

...in that I needed to.Saturday was another really good one - this time directly to the Eiffel Tower. posteritati: for the film obsessed
Blog: cherrypatter - 7 October 2009
posteritati is an unassuming shop at the very bottom of chinatown (or soho according to some) just where it starts to bleed into the city hall and wall street area. usually, i wouldn’t think of roaming around there but there actually seem to be quite a few cute shops there including saturdays, a surf and espresso shop [...]
