If this was the intersection of 23rd and b’way where is the plethora of cars? Well, most people realized pretty quickly that my last post was [...]

Travel Blogging & Coffee @ Mudspot
Blog: GoBackpacking - 18 December 2009
Mudspot, the cafe tied to New York City’s popular orange Mudtruck, was a few blocks from my brother’s apartment in the East Village. While I was waiting near the entrance for Amy to arrive, I watched an endless stream of people duck in from the cold to grab their pre-work cup of coffee. I forget [...]Buy travel insurance from Worldnomads.com (Lonely Planet's preferred carrier)

Local & Interstate Moving & Storage
Blog: Scouting NY - 11 December 2009
I was scouting recently in northern Long Island and happened to drive by this old moving/storage company garage… I love the vintage sign, complete with the old telephone interchange – in this case, ORiole refering to OysteR Bay, NY. Confirming the sign’s authenticity, the company’s telephone number still ends in 6-0114 to this day. However, my favorite [...]

Just a quick note – I was interviewed for the January issue of Popular Photography in a section called “I, Photographer,” about unusual photography jobs. On stands now! Ha, and yes, that is the same shirt I wore in the phone booth video. I’m like Shaggy from Scooby Doo – my entire closet is full of [...]

Travel Gets Social at 92YTribeca
Blog: GoBackpacking - 10 December 2009
Last Thursday night, I descended upon 92YTribeca in NYC for a panel discussion called Travel Gets Social: The New World of Travel Media. Also in attendance: Maggie Soladay whose tweet about it first caught my eye, Michaela from Briefcase to Backpack, Sherry from Ottsworld, and Brian from No Debt World Travel. Later, I gathered that the [...]Buy travel insurance from Worldnomads.com (Lonely Planet's preferred carrier)

Zabb City Thai Food
Blog: GoBackpacking - 10 December 2009
Last week, I headed back to New York City for the third time since returning home from my trip around the world. After settling into my brother’s apartment in the East Village, I looked to Yelp for a good local Thai restaurant to meet my friend for dinner. The Secret Bowling Alley
Blog: Scouting NY - 2 December 2009
I received a very unexpected email last week: We recently purchased a building in Ridgewood, Queens, and while clearing out the basement we discovered a two lane manual bowling alley in very good condition. We did some research and this basement was most probably a club during the prohibition era. Would you or someone you know [...]

45 Years Late to the Fair
Blog: Scouting NY - 25 November 2009
By the time I got there, it was gone. The World’s Fair, you ask? Nope. I am referring to something far more unbelievable… That’s right: Queens once had an honest-to-God Parks Department-approved fountain named “Fountain of the Planet of the Apes.” And if that’s not odd enough, an identical fountain on the opposite side of the Queens [...]

New York Week: Photo Friday, Climbing the Crown
Blog: Ciao Bambino! - 20 November 2009
Growing up on the East Coast, I was lucky enough to go on more than one field trip to the Statue of Liberty. But I hadn’t made taking my kids a priority. On trips back East to visit family, we’d done Philadelphia and all its landmarks, but we never ventured into New York. The Statue of Liberty didn’t seem like enough of a draw. There was too much you couldn’t do.

New York Week: Tips from A Local
Blog: Ciao Bambino! - 19 November 2009
When visiting a city like New York, deciding what to do can be overwhelming. With almost 500 square miles of city, the Big Apple is intimidating, and it can be easy to stick to the tried and true favorite kid-friendly activities, such as the Statue of Liberty, the Children’s Museum and Zoo, etc. Granted, those places must experienced—but NYC offers a plethora of kid-friendly activities in addition to these usual suspects.

Bamboo in Queens
Blog: Scouting NY - 18 November 2009
Douglaston is an area in north-east Queens (near the Long Island border) that filmmakers often use when they’re looking to shoot in an upper-middle class suburban neighborhood. The houses are all relatively large, with (gasp!) actual front lawns AND backyards, and lots of breathing room between properties. I was scouting Douglaston near Udalls Cove when I [...]

The Cemetery on the Old Farm…in Queens?
Blog: Scouting NY - 11 November 2009
Staring down 54th Street from 31st Ave in Woodside, Queens, a street lined with boxy brick apartments and a scant bit of foliage, one would not expect to find one of the oldest cemeteries in New York nestled in amongst the buildings… But there it is, halfway down the block: the Moore-Jackson Cemetery, founded in 1733 [...]
