Shopping in New York City

New Yorkers live in a city of temptation. Candy-colored fashion boutiques, glittering jewelry stores, atmospheric bookshops and sweet scented chocalatiers - no matter your weakness, you'll come face to face with all the objects your heart desires and plenty of other curiosities you might not know existed. New York is one of the world's great fashion capitals, yet unlike in Paris or Milan, there are many places where you can score great deals on couture. A few key areas to keep in mind: Soho and neighboring Nolita for high-end international and local designers; the East Village and the Lower East Side for edgier streetwear and indie fashion; mid-town for venerable retailers like Macy's, as well as over-the-top shops along Fifth Avenue (south of 59th Street); and the Upper East Side (meaning Madison Avenue) for pricey boutiques as well as more wallet-friendly consignment shops.
