Some two million visit each year, with daily numbers reaching 35,000 on discounted Wednesdays and weekends, and any day in July or August (try to go Monday morning). Opened in 1899, the 265-acre zoo, home to some 4000 animals, has leafy areas that re-create different world habitats – African plains and forests, Himalayan mountains, Asian rainforests. Central Park Wildlife Center

The penguins are the main attraction at this modern zoo, though you’ll find more than two dozen other species to visit, including polar bears, snow leopards, tamarin monkeys and red pandas. Feeding times are especially rowdy, fun times to stroll through: watch the sea lions chow down at 11:30am, 2pm and 4pm and see the penguins gobble fish at 10:30am and 2:30pm. The attached Tisch Children’s Zoo (btwn 65th & 66th Sts) is perfect for smaller children.

    Zoo

Inside Prospect Park, just north of the Audubon Center Boathouse is the Children’s Corner. Here, you’ll find a terrific 1912 carousel, originally from Coney Island, and a small zoo, with a petting zoo, sea lions, baboons, wallabies and 400 other animals.
