Temple Emanu-El
Founded in 1845 as the first Reform synagogue in New York, this temple was completed in 1929. It’s now the largest Jewish house of worship in the world, and has a membership of some 3000 families. Stop by for a look at its notable Byzantine and Middle Eastern architecture: its facade features an arch with symbols representing the 12 tribes of Israel, which are also depicted on the grand set of bronze doors. Inside the majestic, buttressed interior are Guastavino tiles, marble wainscoting and brilliant stained-glass windows.
