Lonely Planet review for New Museum of Contemporary Art
This recent addition to the neighborhood, the New Museum of Contemporary Art is a sight to behold: a seven-story stack of off-kilter, white, ethereal boxes, designed by Tokyo-based architects Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa of SANAA and the New York–based firm Gensler. It was a long-awaited breath of fresh air along what was a completely gritty Bowery strip when it arrived – though since its opening, several glossy new constructions have joined it, quickly transforming this once down-and-out avenue. The thrills don’t stop when you step inside, either, as the city’s sole museum dedicated to contemporary art has brought a steady menu of edgy works in new forms, such as seemingly random, discarded materials fused together and displayed in the middle of a vast room.

Just because it's new (building) doesn't mean you have to go

Like P.S. 1, this museum is worth visiting if you have the time and a particular interest in contemporary art. If not, stick with MOMA and use the time to visit the Lower East Side Tenement Museum if you are in the neighborhood and looking for a museum.
