Lonely Planet review for Frick Collection
This spectacular art collection sits in a mansion built by businessman Henry Clay Frick in 1914, one of the many such residences that made up ‘Millionaires’ Row.’ Most of these mansions proved too expensive for succeeding generations and were eventually destroyed, but the wily and very wealthy Frick, a Pittsburgh steel magnate, established a trust to open his private art collection as a museum. It’s a shame that the 2nd floor of the residence is not open for viewing, though the 12 rooms on the ground floor are grand enough and the garden beckons visitors on nice days. The Frick’s Oval Room is graced by Jean-Antoine Houdon’s stunning figure Diana the Huntress. The intimate museum also displays paintings by Titian and Johannes Vermeer, and portraits by Gilbert Stuart, El Greco, Goya and John Constable. An audio tour (available in several languages) is included in the price of admission and helps visitors appreciate the displayed art more fully; you can also dial up information on paintings and sculptures of your choosing on the ArtPhone. Perhaps the best asset here is that it is never crowded, providing a welcoming break from the swarms of gawkers at larger museums, especially on weekends. Also, classical music fans will no doubt be drawn here for the frequent piano and violin concerts that take place on Sundays.

Another great piece of Museum Mile.
remelila recommends this,
It's not as big as the Met, but if you have time for another art museum don't miss this one. Housed in an amazing mansion on Fifth Avenue, there are some beautiful Old Masters here, as well as music concerts and a lovely garden.

Fricken' fantastic!
raphamatics recommends this,
I found the Frick really interesting as the collection is more than just art on a wall. As you wind your way through this huge mansion, you get a real sense for the period it was built in and subsequently rebuilt. This dude had some serious nous in the taste department! The art collection is more about his actual digs which houses sculpture, period furniture, architectural brilliance, amazing gardens, a conservatory and much more.
Good for: architecture, Art lovers, sculpture

Don't Overlook the Frick
alistnyc recommends this,
The Frick is impressive in a few ways. For one, the house alone is worth the visit - you don't have too many opportunities to see an old NYC mansion. Secondly, the collection of art Henry Frick assembled is impressive. The best part of the Frick though is how the Art and the surroundings work together to create a product which might be stronger than its parts. You should watch the film if you go as it provides some good context.
