Lonely Planet review for Greater Hood Memorial AME Zion Church

Treating Harlem Sunday services, which are mostly Baptist, like a theatrical tourist event is a bit of an odd pastime. Still, the music is electrifying, and folks with any desire to feel immersed in such soulfulness will have a hard time staying away. Just behave respectfully and logically – no photos of worshipers in action, for example – and the experience should be a great one. An old saying says that in Harlem ‘there’s a bar on every corner and a church on every block.’ Sunday services usually start at 11am. For a truly unique experience, check out one of the Thursday-night hip-hop services, held at various churches including the Greater Hood Memorial AME Zion Church.

I do not recommend this church to anyone who isn't racist,

    valerie33 does not recommend this,

I do not recommend this church to anyone who isn't racist, sexist, and/or homophobic. If you hate women, white people and the LGBTQ community then this is by all means your church. If you love humanity, are color blind and would never consider discriminating against women or gay people then stay away! I accidentally attended this alleged church while living in the community. I was partly inspired to go there because of all of the violence I was experiencing in the community. I quickly learned that the violence I was experiencing was endorsed by the alleged community leaders running this alleged church. Too bad because they have great music and I liked the idea of a church that reaches out to youth. But reaching out to youth to teach them hate is NOT God's idea of church. How sad that they profess to represent the downtrodden when they miss the whole point that civil rights are human rights; No one is free till everyone is free. Instead they preach that they will be free as soon as others are oppressed. Good luck to them; I wish blessings, peace, and safety.........
