Music shopping in New York City

  1. A

    J&R Music & Computer World

Located on what used to be known as Newspaper Row – the center of New York’s newspaper publishing biz from the 1840s to the 1920s – this is now a communications hub of a more modern sort. Occupying a full block with J&R shops and their separate entrances, this is considered by many to be the best place in the city to buy a computer of any sort. You can buy any other electronics item here, including cameras, recorders and stereos, as well as DVDs and CDs of every kind. You’ll find good deals and knowledgeable staff.

    Jamaica Coliseum Mall

Jamaica’s main draw is hip-hop shopping along the 165th St pedestrian mall, just north of Jamaica Ave, where side-by-side shops hawk Phat Farm, airbrushed sweatshirts of Tupac, Bailey straw hats, pastel neo-jazz suits and African dresses. A good catch-all is Jamaica Coliseum Mall.

    Manny's Music

Manny's sells musical instruments, not music, but if you take your licks seriously you'll want to see where Jimi Hendrix had his (right-handed) Stratocasters re-strung. Everyone from Dizzy Gillespie to the Beatles shopped here, leaving behind pictures to prove it.

Pick up the equipment and the clothes you'll need to be an effective DJ at this LES shop. It stocks turntables, DJ tees, hoodies and the requisite bling, as well as DJ sling bags, record-cleaner kits and even DJ toy figurines.

    Rebel Rebel

This is a tight-fit, tiny music store with CDs and rare vinyl defying the limits of space. Ask for what you don’t see, as there are loads more in the back, out of view.
